Attorney Coatoam attended Kenyon College where he received his B.A. in Political Science in 2005. From there, he briefly pursued careers as a carpenter, political finance director for U.S. Congressional campaigns, and a data management coordinator for national and local non-profit organizations. Mr. Coatoam attended Cleveland State University’s Marshall College of Law and was awarded the Juris Doctor Degree summa cum laude in 2016.
Prior to becoming a attorney, Ray could never have afforded a lawyer, this is something he always keeps in mind when speaking with a potential client. During the 11 year gap between his degrees, Ray spent his professional life pursuing one cause or another, when he wasn’t working construction or tending bar. Attorney Coatoam grew up in a family whose life was in the trades, including concrete, carpentry, plumbing, roofing, and electrical work. During College and before engaging in the practice of law, Ray worked in the trades giving him the ability to appreciate the joys and difficulties of manual labor. This background has given him a unique perspective in representing individuals.
As a Finance Director for U.S. Congressional campaigns, Attorney Coatoam lived and worked in multiple states, sometimes working 20-hour days 6-7 days per week, in hopes of pushing his candidates across the finish line. He was often the first member of the campaign to be hired, meaning he would have to raise his first pay check and work without an office or support staff. While attending law school at night, Ray worked full-time for a non-profit organization focused on cancer research and support. He spent his weekends in the law library and used all of his vacation and sick days to study for finals. He now brings this energy and determination to his client’s causes.
Attorney Coatoam is always looking for his next cause. Ray enjoys defending against evictions, especially against corporate landlords, fighting with debt collectors and insurance companies, and opposing the State of Ohio when it is attempting to steam roll someone with a criminal charge. As a commitment to the community, he accepts appointments from various municipal and county courts, and cases from legal aid. Having worked in the trades he likes fighting for the benefits that workers are entitled to under Ohio’s workers’ compensation system.
Attorney Coatoam has a growing expertise in Estate Administration, Personal Injury cases and family law both in domestic relations court as well as in juvenile court. Ray is experienced in Divorces and Dissolutions, Custody fights, Civil Protection Orders, Bankruptcy, Real Estate disputes, and Neighbor disturbances.
